A rift has occurred within the community of Bellefonte, Centre County, after a Bellefonte High School senior was expelled. The senior was expelled weeks before graduation, after he voluntarily surrendered a fishing knife, deemed a weapon by the district, on a field trip, triggering a 3,500-signature petition against the school board’s unanimous decision. The student is reported to have accidentally brought the knife, and when he realized his mistake gave the knife to a teacher. While the board cited a “consistent” application of their policy, critics argue the penalty is excessive. Superintendent Roy Rakszawski noted in a letter that school policy dictates potential expulsion for the mere possession of a weapon, regardless of intent.
